Ken Smith, Director of Technology

Mr. Ken Smith joined Routes AstroEngineering, in 1990, as Director of Technology, where he focuses on applications of advanced technologies to imaging and life sciences. Ken brings over 25 years of Aerospace experience in design, assembly and testing of hardware and real-time software. Over his career, he has been responsible or involved with scientific payloads on 5 satellites and 2 sub-orbital rocket flights, all of which were successful missions. At Routes, he was the technical manager for the Ultraviolet Imager, flown on the Swedish FREJA satellite. Ken has been responsible for the:

  • Video and illumination system for Insect Habitat facility, completed and to be flown on ISS.
  • Detector subsystem of OSIRIS instrument, flown on the Swedish ODIN satellite.
  • UV and polarizing photometers on the sub-orbital rocket ACTIVE.
  • Digitization subsystem for REX R.F. receiver, flown on the sub-orbital rocket OEDIPUS C.

Prior to joining Routes AstroEngineering, Ken worked at Canadian Astronautics Limited (now EMS Technologies Canada), where he was technical manager for the electronics in the:

  • WINDII instrument, flown on the NASA UARS satellite
  • Ultraviolet imaging cameras, flown on the Russian INTERBALL satellite
  • Ultraviolet imaging cameras, flown on the Swedish VIKING satellite.

Mr. Smith holds a B. Eng. and M. Eng. from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
